According to a recent study conducted at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, UV light may help alleviate the intense pain felt by fibromyalgia syndrome patients. The study was conducted by dermatology, rheumatology, and public health science researchers, and was an outgrowth of an earlier study that found that participants reportedly saw improvement in arthritis and back pain.
“We decided to look at fibromyalgia patients because there is such a huge need for treatment,” said Steven R Feldman, M.D., Pd.D., the director of the Center for Dermatology Research at Wake Forest Baptist. The report appeared in the January issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine. It included 19 patients, and found that receiving light treatments three times per week resulted in improvement in pain, well-being and relaxation.
